Monument Valley

After the surreal landscapes of Utah, it seemed like an obvious choice to take a detour through Monument Valley.

It turned out to be one of the most memorable drives of our journey so far.

Wave after wave of storm clouds swept through. Some of them bringing thunder and lightning.

As a result Emma was pretty stoked.

We spent the afternoon weaving our way around the dirt road between the monuments, stopping for photos between bouts of heavy rain.

We’re sure it is an interesting place in calm weather, but for us the storms swirling through, kicking up dust in the howling winds, followed by sudden downpours and lightning made the trip all the more memorable.

Sometimes we like the rain. When we aren’t camping in it.

Which meant that our time in Monument Valley was followed by a long drive through increasingly torrential rain to try to find an acceptably dry camp spot for the night.

So, can you select “Not in the rain” as a destination on the GPS?

But I guess that is the price you pay for getting to enjoy scenery like this from the comfort of your home on wheels:

El Espinazo del Diablo (the Devil’s Backbone—a mountain pass along Mexico’s highway 40) is an infamously sinuous mountain road that joins the towns of Mazatlán, Sinaloa and Durango, Durango. The road has a bit of a reputation for punishing travellers with terrifying accident-inducing winding turns. Luckily travellers are also rewarded with spectacular views as the road runs along a mountain ridge, high in the Sierra Madre mountains.

This seemed like exactly the kind of thing we should investigate further.

Headed for the April Sun in Cuba

The sun was low in the sky as we roared away from the airport in a taxi. Soon we were darting through traffic in the streets of Havana. Decrepit vehicles from a bygone era belched toxic fumes through the open windows. The roar of ancient motorcycle engines filled our ears. Everywhere we looked, images of Che Guevara gazed contemplatively back—from buildings, billboards, posters and street art. We had arrived in Cuba.

We loved Monument Valley… I wasn’t fully sure what to expect but it was well worth it.
