Photo Friday—Golden Bay

We’ve been saving our money for our big road trip for a few years now and the countdown is now on (sort of, it’s still over 6 months away). Sometimes we get so swept up in our plans, that we forget how much awesome is in our own backyard.

We’ve cut back on all the weekends away tramping (hiking, for our non-Kiwi friends), camping and road-tripping. Instead choosing to save the money we would have spent on tanks of diesel to get there for all the driving we’ll have to do to get from Alaska to Patagonia.

It’s not like we are missing out, we’ve driven, camped, walked and cycled all over Te Waipounamu (That’s the fancy new optional name for our South Island as of yesterday) and visited some, but not enough of Te Ika A Māui (which up until yesterday was officially known as the plain old North Island). I’m sure we’ll spend more time travelling in the backroads of both islands when we get back. But sometimes we do just need to take the time to step back and remember what an awesome place we live.

This week’s photo Friday is sunrise from a cozy beach camping spot in Golden Bay (That’s at the top of Te Waipounamu—The South Island) for those playing at home.

Photo Friday—Mt Fyffe

Here’s another one from not too far from home. The mountains in New Zealand might not be exceptionally tall, but they are very conveniently located and without fail will offer up some spectacular views. Mt Fyffe ticks all these boxes and—as an added bonus—is easy to walk up.

We probably shouldn’t have slept in, it was the middle of winter, so the days were short and we had about 2 1/2 hours to drive to get to Kaikoura to start the walk. After much faffing we finally started the steep walk up Mt Fyffe in the afternoon, winding our way up the steep four wheel drive track. We reached the snow line just after passing the hut, here the track narrowed to a walking track. The sun was getting low in the sky as we made our way up the final stretch of the track. We watched the sun set as we trudged our way back down to Kaikoura for a well-earned dinner.

While the base of the mountain is nearly at sea level the peak reaches a very reasonable 1602m, all within a short distance of the ocean. What you can’t see in the photo above (Which looks west towards the Kaikoura range) is how very close the summit of Mt Fyffe is to the coast, so I’ve included this one, looking in the other direction once we finally reached the summit:

[…] week’s photo Friday is from Lake Monowai in Fiordland near the bottom of Te Waipounamu. Confusingly, there is no lake in this photo. It isn’t that I have no photos of the lake, I […]
