Photo Friday—Golden Bay

We’ve been saving our money for our big road trip for a few years now and the countdown is now on (sort of, it’s still over 6 months away). Sometimes we get so swept up in our plans, that we forget how much awesome is in our own backyard.

We’ve cut back on all the weekends away tramping (hiking, for our non-Kiwi friends), camping and road-tripping. Instead choosing to save the money we would have spent on tanks of diesel to get there for all the driving we’ll have to do to get from Alaska to Patagonia.

It’s not like we are missing out, we’ve driven, camped, walked and cycled all over Te Waipounamu (That’s the fancy new optional name for our South Island as of yesterday) and visited some, but not enough of Te Ika A Māui (which up until yesterday was officially known as the plain old North Island). I’m sure we’ll spend more time travelling in the backroads of both islands when we get back. But sometimes we do just need to take the time to step back and remember what an awesome place we live.

This week’s photo Friday is sunrise from a cozy beach camping spot in Golden Bay (That’s at the top of Te Waipounamu—The South Island) for those playing at home.

Photo Friday—Castle Hill

This photo from the archives is a few years old now, but it seems like a good place to start—Showcasing some stunning New Zealand countryside. Not too far from home, Castle Hill is is on the road heading across the island via Arthur’s Pass. The area gets its name from the huge limestone rocks that ring the hilltop which look like the remnants of an old castle.

[…] week’s photo Friday is from Lake Monowai in Fiordland near the bottom of Te Waipounamu. Confusingly, there is no lake in this photo. It isn’t that I have no photos of the lake, I […]
